Mae Chee Sansanee is a senior Buddhist leader in Thailand. Mae Chee, meaning 'Sister' in Thai, is a great proponent of peace and humanitarian activity, and very highly regarded by the people of her country. At the young age of 27 she renounced a life of wealth and worldly position to take ordination as a Buddhist nun and study the path of Buddhist teachings. She is the Director of Sathira Dhammasthan, a Buddhist retreat center located on four acres on the outskirts of bustling Bangkok. She has transformed this site into an oasis of lotus ponds, temples and houses in traditional Thai architecture, with gardens of rare and beautiful orchids, hidden shrines and altars set into the beautiful natural surroundings. Her center is a haven where all are welcome to take respite from the difficulties they may encounter. She provides shelter to unwed mothers, young girls seeking escape from prostitution and helps provide education for young children. She is an accomplished artist and has been nominated as one of the ten most important women in Thailand.
