About Aspen
Founded as a mining camp in the Colorado Silver Boom and named because of the abundance of aspen trees in the area, the city is now a ski resort and an upscale tourist center. The city sits 90 miles east of Grand Junction along the southeast (upper) end of the Roaring Fork Valley, along the Roaring Fork River, a tributary of the Colorado River about 40 miles south of Glenwood Springs. It is surrounded by mountain and wilderness areas on three sides: Red Mountain to the north, Smuggler Mountain to the east, and Aspen Mountain to the south.
Despite occupying a total area of 3.5 square miles, Aspen is among the most popular ski destinations in the entire West. Aspen and its sister town of Snowmass Village service four major ski areas (Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Buttermilk, the highest concentration anywhere in Colorado. The surrounding peaks are some of Colorado's most picturesque, and provide a massive playground for both winter and summer activities.
Visitors can take tours of historic landmarks such as the Wheeler Opera House or the Hotel Jerome, and shop at trendy outlets or smaller local stores. A selection of art galleries, a theater and a concert hall are available for those seeking culture. The town of Aspen also plays host to a number of festivals, workshops, and competitions during the year such as the famous Aspen Music Festival.
The Aspen Institute, founded in 1950, is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enlightened leadership and open-minded dialogue.
