American actresses Linda Evans and Lindsay Wagner gave their support Wednesday to a global movement of women for peace.
"I will go wherever any of these women would like me to go, any place in the world and stand side-by-side with them," said Evans as a three-day meeting of 500 women drew to a close at the United Nations' European headquarters in Geneva.

Scaling back Helen O'Donnell, daughter of John F. Kennedy adviser Kenneth O'Donnell, says she's scaling back plans for her new political magazine "common good" in the face of a wretched climate for raising start-up funds. The magazine was set to launch as a monthly in october. But now the magazine will be a bimonthly for the first year, with an introductory issue in late October or early November. The debut issue will be made available to media, potential investors, and subscribers - not newsstands.

Under and over, under, over . . .
Rwandan widows weave a path to a new beginning and peace
You might think this is a story about the beauty of this basket -- its intriguing zigzag design. But it's actually a story about healing and about making peace.
It's a story about how healing and peace can be achieved with the weaving of one reed under and over another -- like hands intertwined in a handshake.

500 religious leaders and businesswomen met in Geneva this week for the Global Peace Initiative.
When Toni Maloney, a nonpracticing Catholic, left here this week, she was "all 'spiritualed' out," she said with a smile.
The New York City businesswoman was returning home - her horizons widened - from a conference the likes of which she had never attended before: 500 women religious leaders from around the world had gathered in a search to inject a spiritual dimension into peace-building, and to harness women entrepreneurs to their effort.

Two years ago, 1,200 of the world's religious and spiritual leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations-sponsored Millennium World Peace Summit. But just 15 percent of the delegates were women.

The smell of history was in the air. At the United Nations in New York, President Bush talked about the necessity of war. At the United Nations in Geneva, for the first time in history, women were convened under the auspices of the United Nations to talk about new initiatives aimed at the promotion of world peace. The voices were in tension, but the dialectic between the two may well decide the future history of the world.

Last week, it was the women's turn. For three days, more than 500 women from all around the world gathered in Geneva for the Global Peace Initiative of Women Religious and Spiritual Leaders. The conference was an outgrowth of the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders, held at the United Nations two years ago, which attracted mainly male representatives of religious and spiritual groups. Elaine Braff, who holds a master's degree in art therapy and has conducted a private practice in the field in South Orange for 23 years, was one of the delegates in Geneva. Braff said she learned about the women's gathering in the spring and worked on fund-raising activities to subsidize the travel and hotel costs of women from disadvantaged parts of the world. Braff paid her own expenses for the trip, and expects to remain active in the peace effort. A member of Oheb Shalom synagogue in South Orange, Braff fell into the category of women in business and public life at the summit.

Sara Smith gave a "feather blessing" and called upon her Native American ancestors. Rabbi Laura Geller recited from the Jewish mourning prayer. Sana Afandi chanted the opening verse of Islam's holy book. And Mae Chee Sansanee, a Buddhist nun, led a group meditation.
Those religious figures and a dozen more were among 250 women who gathered yesterday in the ballroom of a District hotel for that most venerable of Washington traditions: the power breakfast.

About 500 delegates from more than 75 nations ended the meeting with a statement, "The Geneva Declaration of Women for Global Harmony, Peace and Justice," that said they condemn "all forms of violence against women whether in the name of religion, custom or tradition, and call upon the world community to outlaw all inhumane and barbaric forms of punishment deployed against women."
