Amid a new escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinians, women from both areas met Thursday to build a grass roots movement to end the fighting there.
Organizers called the first meeting of the Women's Partnership for Peace in the Middle East a brainstorming session to find ways to end the cycle of violence in the region.

If men can't achieve peace in the Middle East, maybe women can.
Today, they will begin trying in Oslo, Norway, and two religious leaders from the Erie region figure prominently in the effort.
Sister Joan Chittister of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie will speak during the opening session of the first conference of Women's Partnership for Peace in the Middle East. Joan Brown Campbell, director of Chautauqua Institution's religion department and former general secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ, is chairwoman of the three-day event.

Israeli, Palestinian, and American women leaders met last week to form a Women's Partnership for Peace in the Middle East. Composed of women in the Israeli Parliament (the Knesset), the Palestinian Authority, and the US Congress, the 70 delegates met in Oslo, Norway, at the Nobel Peace Institute, according to InterPress Service. The conference stressed the importance of including women in the peace process. "Women have an important role to play that has not been fully recognized yet," said Dena Merriam of the Global Peace Initiative of Women, which organized the summit, according to IPS.

Upon her return from a summit in Norway involving Palestinian and Israeli women leaders, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said here Sunday that she will call on President Bush to name a special envoy to monitor the peace process in the Middle East.
She proposed former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, and former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton or George Bush as ideal candidates for the job.

The place is Israel. The scene is the Calendria gate between Ramallah on the West Bank and Jerusalem, 20 minutes away. Four other members of the Global Initiative for Peace by Women Religious Leaders and I are returning to Jerusalem from a visit into the Palestinian city of Ramallah to see for ourselves what is really going on in occupied Palestinian areas and Israeli border areas.
