Kamla Chowdhry: A Loving Tribute to Her Life and Spirit
Edited by Dena Merriam, Katherine Marshall and Lincoln Chen
The passing of Dr. Kamla Chowdhry in early 2006 was a loss not only to her friends and colleagues, but to the whole development community, for she was an intellectual, an academic, and an advocate with a rare passion for social justice. Few people today carry the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi with such loyalty to his vision, commitment to his principles, and determination to make that vision and principles a contemporary reality. Her understanding of development was very much intertwined with her concern for the environment, which was not to be sacrificed for material progress. She saw that the best practices in development were those in which the moral and ethical dimensions were engaged -- for this brought the commitment, perseverance and understanding to make it sustainable.
This book is a collection of tributes made by a few of her closest friends and associates, including Maurice Strong, Stephen Rockefeller, James Wolfensohn and Mary Evelyn Tucker.
It was compiled by three of her long-time colleagues and friends, Dena Merriam, Katherine Marshall and Lincoln Chen. It is a record of the way Kamla Chowdhry lived and how she affected the people who knew her and the world around her.
Kamla Chowdhry was 85 years old when she passed away, and her commitment and service to humanity was strong until the end. This is Kamla’s legacy to the world, and this is the inspiration she has passed on to us.
