A Universal Prayer for the Next Generation of African Leaders
Our dearest Divine One, known by many names and forms...
Into your presence we come to pray that your love, wisdom and compassion Be upon this generation of Africans.
Lend them the strength and the power to make their voices heard, with clarity and determination, Provide them the knowledge to reclaim the resources of Africa, the resources that rightly belong to them and their children, so that the living waters of Lake Victoria once again feed its people, the people of Africa.
Grant vision to the young women and men of Sudan that they may see beauty in their diversity and find healing in each other, and turn their fertile land into a source of nourishment for all of Africa, and may they help bring to all the places here torn by conflict new life and new leadership...
May this generation have the wisdom to turn back the weapons of destruction that are causing their nations to bleed and say enough to those who would sell them these arms.
Grant them the inspiration and creativity to bring forth an African model of development, not one imposed or borrowed from other nations, but one born of this soil, of this history, of these traditions and beliefs, one built on many generations of respect and gratitude for all that the earth has given and continues to give.
May they treasure and keep strong the spirituality of Africa so that it may be felt around the world and help in the healing of this troubled planet.
May they be a guide for every African youth to know with pride what it is to be an African, and may these young women, these mothers-to-be of Africa, come forward now with dignity to take their place as leaders of the new generation, And, with compassion, may they help the nations of the world turn with respect toward Africa - seeing Africa for what it is, not for what can be taken.
May this generation be the one to turn back the tide of HIV/AIDS and disease, helping Africa once again to find its center and heal the deep scars of colonialism, scars born by all the world.
Grant them the leadership needed to awaken in their peers across the planet a new understanding of what it means to be human, knowing that we are all bound together, and that by hurting one, we hurt all.
Above all, grant them the courage to challenge what is, because what is, is not according to your law. Grant them the willingness to speak truth, no matter how difficult, to keep their moral center and not be swayed by material gain at the expense of Dharma, or the righteous way.
To those who would do business with Africa, let them find the voice to say it will be on equal footing, according to our mutual needs.
They cannot achieve these things alone, this new generation, not in this time, with so many powerful forces at play. But their potential is great, and as a family, we can support them.
I have no doubt that all these things will come to be, because Africa’s future is secure, and Africa will rise to new heights, but may they be the catalysts for change.
And with your blessings may these things come to pass in their lifetime.
