The Spiritual Future of Humanity

(the third of four online discussions)

Friday, July 9th, 2021

This month, GPIW will be continuing a four-part series of online discussions entitled 'The Spiritual Future of Humanity'. This third discussion in the series will include the thoughts of three prominent spiritual teachers from different traditions on how they see the spiritual future of the human community. What are some of the trends, what are some of the positive signs, and what are some of the challenges that lie ahead from a spiritual perspective?

Discussants Include:

Swami Atmarupananda, Sri Ramakrishna Mission
Born in America, Swami Atmarupananda discovered the Vedanta tradition of Hinduism as a teenager and developed what has become a lifelong fascination and dedication. He joined the Ramakrishna Order of India as a monk in 1969 at the age of nineteen, and spent many years in India engaged in monastic, scholarly, and spiritual training. Altogether he has spent almost fourteen years in India, and thirty-six years working for the Order in America. For many years he has traveled to various countries of the world to speak, give retreats both in English and Spanish, engage in inter-spiritual dialog, and to participate in conferences dedicated to finding a new, spiritual foundation for economic and social development.

Rev. Diane Berke, OneSpirit Interfaith Seminary
Rev. Diane Berke is the Founder and Spiritual Director of One Spirit Learning Alliance and One Spirit Interfaith Seminary. Ordained in 1988, she is a respected pioneer in the field of interfaith/interspiritual education and has trained and ordained roughly 1500 interfaith/interspiritual ministers over the course of her work. In addition to her ordination, Diane holds advanced degrees in sociology, psychology, and therapeutic counseling, and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York State.

Kosen Greg Snyder, Union Theological Seminary
Kosen Gregory Snyder is the Senior Director and Assistant Professor of Buddhist Studies at Union Theological Seminary, where he oversees the Master of Divinity degree program in Buddhism and Interreligious Engagement as well as the Thích Nhất Hạnh Program for Engaged Buddhism.
Professor Snyder is an ordained Zen Buddhist priest and dharma-transmitted teacher in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki. He co-founded and is currently the senior resident priest at the Brooklyn Zen Center and Ancestral Heart Zen Monastery in Millerton, NY. He is one of the founders of the Buddhist Action Coalition, whose mission is to organize and inspire compassionate Buddhist initiatives in advancing social, economic, and environmental justice through advocacy and nonviolent direct action.

Daniel Abreu, Conexion Natura (moderator)
Daniel Abreu currently explores and structures learning spaces to deepen our connection with ourselves and the natural world. He is a co-organizer of the Young Leaders for the Planet, based in the Dominican Republic, which offers nature education programming for schoolchildren and adolescents. His support offers opportunities for youth to meaningfully engage and interrogate ecological and climate-based thinking, and to work hands-on and collaboratively. The students are instructed in a number of interdisciplinary areas (such as ecology, biology, sociology, ethnobotany, permaculture, mindfulness, and conflict management), take field trips to ecological sites, listen to guest speakers from a variety of professional fields, design sustainable projects, and more. Daniel is a facilitator of the “Work that Reconnects,” co-creating and holding space for bringing together traditional wisdom and contemporary science with the purpose of experiencing inner harmony, community bonding and service to the earth. His key focus is on nurturing deep connections between humans with all elements of nature and helping to restore a benevolence between humans and other life on this planet.
